A brief describition of Malawian folk dances

Dancing as perfomance, is a natural human activity of making dance with the voice and other instruments. It should be made enjoyable. It serves as an important tool for expressing one's feeling, and for learning one's or other peoples cultural values. Through active participation, dancing enables us to experience the excting aspects of dances and to enjoy the thrills of dancing creation. The following are some of dances.

CHING’ANDE

PLACE : Lilongwe, Kasungu, Dowa and Ntchisi District

TRIBE : Chewa

OCCASSION : Wedding ceremony

TIME : Afternoon hours

GENDER : Women only

AGE : Adult (eighteen years and above)

VIMBUZA

PLACE : Rumphi, Mzuzu, Karonga and Mzimba District (Northern Region of Malawi)

TRIBE : Tumbuka

OCCASSION : Healing ceremony but today is performed for entertainment as well

TIME : During the night

FUNCTION : Healing dance which performed to cure a member of mental and Psychological illness

GENDER : Male and Female

AGE : Adult (eighteen years and above)

CHIRIMIKA

PLACE :Nkhata-Bay, Nkhota-Kota and Rumphi District

TRIBE : Tumbuka

OCCASSION : Wedding ceremony

TIME : During the day

GENDER : men and women

AGE : No age limit

DANCE METAPHOR/REPRESENTATION DANCE

PLACE : Academic institutions like High Schools and Colleges (i.e. Chancellor Colleges, St. Andrews International Schools and other learning institutions

TRIBE : Any (i.e. students and academic levels)

OCCASSION : It representation dance performed during cultural events (i.e. school competitions and cultural festival

FUNCTION : The dance is performed for Entertainment, Education, and Awareness Campaigns on HIV/AIDS, Corruptions, Human Rights and other social Cultural issues

TIME : During the day and night
